UNCW Men’s and Women’s soccer athletes get Rookie of the Week honors

RICHMOND, Virginia (UNCWSports.com) – UNCW freshman forward Molly McGarry has been named co-recipient of the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Rookie-of-the-Week Award and UNCW freshman forward Emil Elveroth has been named recipient of the Colonial Athletic Association’s Men’s Soccer Rookie-of-the-Week Award.

The Charlotte, N.C., product shared the award with Elon freshman midfielder Reena Wichmann after being involved in two of the team’s three goals last week as UNCW posted a 1-0-1 record.

“Well done to Molly on earning this award,” said Coach Paul Cairney. “She has been working very hard and has the talent to influence games. As with any individual award, I know Molly shares this with her teammates.”

After scoring the Seahawks’ lone goal in a 1-1 tie against Old Dominion, McGarry recorded an assist on the game-winning goal by redshirt sophomore forward Kirsten Bootes in overtime when UNCW edged Appalachian State by a 2-1 margin.

McGarry, the Seahawks’ leading scorer with five points, leads UNCW into its final two non-conference games of the season this week. The Seahawks visit East Carolina on Thursday, Sept. 14, before hosting Campbell on Sunday, Sept. 17.

Emil Elveroth, the Halmstad, Sweden, native helped the No. 15 Seahawks improve to 4-1-0 on the season by scoring the eventual game-winning goal in their 2-0 victory over Longwood on Friday night. He gave UNCW a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute when he tallied his first career goal.

“It was great to see Emil score his first goal for UNCW, and the winning goal at that,” said Coach Aidan Heaney. “His all-around play has been stellar for us so far, without getting on the scoresheet, so, I am pleased for him that his work was rewarded with a goal.”

Elveroth and the Seahawks open CAA play on Sunday, Sept. 17, when they travel to Delaware for a 1 p.m. game against the defending league champion Blue Hens.
