WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Before many of us were born, UNCW was there as Wilmington college. Now, the University’s staff and students celebrate as the school recognizes its 70 years of existence.
UNCW started back in 1947, just around the end of World War II. Chancellor Jose Sartarelli says this all happened because of the schools mission to support and encourage students. He believes even the first chancellor of the school expected the university to be a staple for years to come.
“Whoever was thinking about the future of this university back when it was just a junior college back in 1947, probably had very high aspirations. Whether those high aspirations were communicated or not, I’m not sure but they probably did it and I know they had big aspirations for the college,” Sartarelli said.
Seventy years ago, UNCW’s first class was made up of a total of 238 students.
