Laney and Hoggard play for bragging rights and first place

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — When two New Hanover County teams square off, it’s always a rivalry game with bragging rights on the line. This week there’s also a place atop of the conference standings up for grabs.

It’s the undefeated Hoggard Vikings playing host to the 3-2 Laney Bucs in our 5th Quarter Game of the Week.

Both teams opened Mideastern conference play in dominating fashion. The Vikings have been dismantling opponents… outscoring them by a combined score of 174-27 through five games.

On the other side of the ball, Laney has proven they have playmakers on both side of the ball. Led by two previous 5th Quarter Player of the Week winners, the Bucs look to pull off the upset on the road.

“It’s all about execution and doing what we do,” Laney Head Coach Ashaad Yeoman said. “We have to tackle well on defense and make sure that we don’t get any blocks on special teams. If you look at the film, they have quite a few blocks in a couple games. We have to make sure we get that ball off and block well and that’s the name of the game. It’s not too hard, not too difficult, just keep it simple.”

“They’ve got great team speed and good size,” Hoggard Head Coach Craig Underwood said. “They’re very aggressive on defense so they’ll definitely be a challenge for us. We’ve got great senior leadership this year. Those guys went through a lot last year in terms of ups and downs of the long season last year. They’re staying grounded and we understand that we have to get better every week.”

The latest battle for Wilmington begins tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Scott Braswell Stadium. We’ll have all the highlights and action from Week Seven of the high school football season tomorrow night at 11 on the 5th Quarter.
