WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We all know that kids are the future. Our Extraordinary Person of the Week is making sure kids in our area have a safe place where opportunity exists in numerous ways. WWAY’s Daniel Seamans introduces you to the leader who is making sure the mission continues for years to come.
Inside the Community Boys and Girls Club you’ll find some stars on the court.
You’ll also find a proud leader. “There are very frew people in the world who can claim, any organization that can claim, Michael Jordan, we can,” Wayne Lofton joked with WWAY’s Daniel Seamans.
Wayne grew up with the club. “I was a registered here,” he said, “in the club that’s behind you on those boards, when I was 6 years old.”
Now he’s the president of the club with a focus on the kids and their future.
“What we do, we’re a a day shelter that reduces crime, recitivism increases the number of people who graduate and do positive things in life. It makes for a better community for all of us. The challenges are great, but I think the opportunity is greater.”
Trophies showcase the proof of creating a better life for members in the past.
But his team is living proof.
“Everybody who has served and currently serving, they have their spirit of charity and philanthropy but more importantly, the spirit of love to these children because we were all at risk that a lot of people have forgotten when we were all growing up the challenges were immense.”
For 80 years now this club has given kids a shot.
“We were all children before we were adults and the good book says we will become children again at some point,” he added. “So I think that looking out for youth and the elderly is one of the most overlooked and underserved areas of our political and philanthropy lives in America and we need to change that.”
It’s that kind of looking out, Wayne Lofton, that makes you(and everyone who is a part of the team)…..EXTRAORDINARY.
