WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — “When kids get out of school, this is like one of the first places they come to,” said Martin Luther King Center recreation coordinator Cliff Barnett.
The MLK Center on 8th Street in downtown Wilmington is a very popular place.
Children and adults alike converge on the center to break a sweat by exercising or playing sports.
And the best part? The majority of the programs at the MLK Center won’t cost you a dime.
“We have different things like the after school program, different clubs for adults to join, different things for other people to be a part of. So we’re trying to be that shining light in the community and be a positive impact for the kids, for everybody in the community,” said Barnett.
Barnett has always had a passion for sports. He uses that passion to be a positive influence on the kids at the center.
“It’s definitely a place for them to be safe and definitely a place for them to live a healthier lifestyle. I’m influenced by a lot of fitness and wellness and some things that I like to pass along to the kids when I’m talking to them is the way they eat, something that they eat, some workouts and things like that,” said Barnett.
