WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – New UNCW head women’s basketball coach Karen Barefoot couldn’t help but be excited for her squad to hit the Trask Coliseum floor for its first official practice of the 2017-18 season on Tuesday.
The session, which lasted nearly three hours, featured a number of team and individual drills as the Seahawks begin preparation for the regular season opener on Sunday, Nov. 12, against UNC Pembroke.
“It was a proud moment to be with them as their head coach,” said Barefoot, the 11th head coach in UNCW women’s basketball history. “I could see it in the locker room that the team was ready to come out and attack the day and I think that is what they did.
“It’s a lot of teaching and you have to be tough-minded early. We tried to focus on the little things and everybody was kept accountable. The team had fun and communicated well during the entire practice along with working very hard, which is I wanted them to do.”
Beginning with Tuesday’s workout, the Seahawks will have 25 full-length practices prior to their regular season opener. UNCW will also face Greensboro College in an exhibition contest on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m.
Led by senior guard Madison Raque, the Seahawks return nine letter winners from last year’s team. Raque, the only UNCW player to start all 31 games a season ago, paced the Seahawks with a 10.7 scoring average and ranked 12th in the CAA by knocking down 33.0 percent of her three-point field goal attempts.
