WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two teams have really put themselves far ahead in the Mideastern Conference. Hoggard and New Hanover both sit undefeated, but things might change after the rivalry game tomorrow night happening in Buc-Town.
The Wildcats are coming in looking to stay unbeaten in a contest against the Laney Bucs for our 5th Quarter Game of the Week. This rivalry may only be second to the Vikings-Cats rivalry in Wilmington, but New Hanover has run the rivalry as of late.
Laney hasn’t beaten New Hanover since 2008, but last season, they took the game down to the wire with the Wildcats ultimately losing by one point, 21-20.
Last week, the Bucs had an aggressive game plan that ultimately didn’t workout against Hoggard while New Hanover toppled Topsail. Each coach understands what it’s like to play in a rivalry game, anything can happen.
“Anytime you get cross-town rivals coming together, you know the old cliche, you throw the books out the window, the records and all that kind of stuff,” New Hanover Head Coach Earl Smith said. “Laney has a lot of talent with their quarterback and runningback and they have a lot of speed. We’ve got to be ready to play.”
“Last year, it cost us playing both teams back to back,” Laney Head Coach Ashaad Yeoman said. “We lost to these guys by one point and it kind of affected us in the next week. That was my fault, I’ve got to get these guys ready. I learned from last year and we’ll see how it works out this year.”
A rivalry renewed tomorrow night at Laney High School, you already know we’ll have all those highlights and all of the other football action in the Cape Fear. Tune in tomorrow night at 11 on WWAY for the 5th Quarter.
