WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – UNCW head women’s basketball coach Karen Barefoot has announced a trio of players who will serve as team captains for the 2017-18 season.
Redshirt senior forward Jenny DeGraaf, senior guard Madison Raque and sophomore guard Lacey Suggs will be the Seahawks’ leaders when they take the court for the first time on Sunday afternoon against Greensboro College in exhibition action.
Raque, an honorable mention selection on the Preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association team, returns after leading the Seahawks in scoring last year with a 10.7 average. The Louisville, Ky., product was the lone player to start all 31 games last season and recorded 16 double-digit scoring efforts, including a career-high 28 points against Catawba.
A native of Springboro, Ohio, DeGraaf ranked third on the team last year with a 7.3 scoring average while appearing in 30 contests. The Penn State transfer also ranked second on the squad with a .422 field goal percentage and fashioned a double-double against Norfolk State and Northeastern.
Suggs, a product of White Lake, N.C., appeared in three games as a freshman last season for the Seahawks and was a recipient of the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award. The former East Bladen High School standout was a three-time all-state pick for the Eagles, who won three conference titles during her scholastic career.
