Meeting held to discuss proposed improvements to Carolina Beach Road

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Making a busy road in our area safer and less congested. That’s the goal of proposed improvements to Carolina Beach Road.

The NC Department of Transportation held a public meeting Monday night about the proposed improvements to Carolina Beach Road from Burnett Boulevard to Shipyard Boulevard.

The project proposes to upgrade Carolina Beach Road to a four-lane, median divided road.

The NCDOT said construction for the project is estimated to cost $12,400,000. The project’s total cost is estimated to be $18,675,000.

Construction is currently scheduled to begin in Winter 2021.

NCDOT said the project is needed to improve mobility, relieve congestion, and improve safety for pedestrians and drivers.

“The median that is going to be constructed in the center of the roadway will help restrict the access so that the left turns coming out of driveways and out of side streets are forced to go right and then make a u-turn, which will eliminate one of the most dangerous movements that vehicles make when they turn left,” Katie Hite, Division Project Development Engineer for Division 3, said.

The public can continue to submit comments and questions regarding the project to NCDOT until November 30, 2017.
