WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Friday night Buc-Town honored the 22 members of the senior class who were playing in their final home game of the season. Things started off slow for the Bucs but they caught fire late and sent their seniors off with a 33-27 thriller victory over the West Brunswick Trojans.
“I was really proud of the defense,” Laney Safety Karl Lane said. “We’ve got the seniors out there playing the last time in Buc-Town and I think everyone showed out. The juniors really stepped up for us to send us off right.”
Yes, juniors like Sherod Sidbury had a big time game Friday night to get that must-win for the team in blue and yellow. But it was one of their seniors that played hero at the end of each half to turn the tides.
Micah Hairston scored with a minute left in the first half and set up the game winning touchdown at the end to give the laney fans reason to cheer.
“It was so surreal,” Hairston said. “I couldn’t really celebrate. It was like ‘did I really just do that?’ It was just so big I don’t even know how to put it into words.”
Hairston had to play hero on Friday night because the team fell behind the Trojans a couple times including 14-0 after the first quarter. However, a sign of a good team is one that can rise in the face of adversity and be resilient until the final buzzer sounds.
“One thing that we preach here is that if you give up, the result is going to be determined right away,” Laney Coach Ashaad Yeoman said. “But if you never give up you never know what the outcome may be. With us going down by two scores and just keep fighting, if he hadn’t, then the outcome would’ve been determined already. I’m just loving that the kids have that fight in them.”
Congratulations once again to the Laney Bucs on being named our 5th Quarter Team of the Week.
