Joe Benson elected as mayor of Carolina Beach, council still undecided

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — It seems like every two years there’s a battle in Carolina Beach for council and mayor. This year was no exception.

The six candidate race for two open council seats incumbent Leeann Pierce is the top vote-getter. In second place is JoDan Garza, but he is just 10 votes ahead of incumbent Gary Doetsch so we will have to see how that goes after the canvass.

Dozens of people waited patiently in front of the Carolina Beach Recreation Center as results were posted on the door Tuesday evening.

Many people were shocked by the results for mayor as challenger Joe Benson beat Dan Wilcox. Benson told WWAY reporter Basil John said he was surprised.

“Slightly in shock,” mayor-elect Benson said. “This is not exactly what I expected. I worked hard. I had hoped I would but you know, it’s a very pleasant surprise tonight.”

Wilcox was mayor for two terms and says it was a tough loss but is happy for Benson.

“Nobody likes to lose but I’ve had a good run. I’m happy with what I’ve accomplished here,” Wilcox said.
