BLADENBORO, NC (WWAY) — Bladenboro Police say two men are behind bars after robbing a grocery store Friday.
According to a release from Bladen County Sheriff James A. McVicker, a man entered Fresh Foods IGA around 11:00 a.m. and assaulted a store clerk.
The suspect then took a cash box and fled the scene in a grey car. Bladen County 911 was contacted, which notified the Bladenboro Police Department as well as surrounding law enforcement agencies.
Bladenboro Police Chief Chris Hunt saw the vehicle traveling on NC Highway 211, and pursued the suspects into Robeson County.
The vehicle eventually stopped near Antioch Grocery off of Old Whiteville Rd.
Chief Hunt was able to arrest the driver, but the passenger fled on foot into the woods.
K9 units and a helicopter were called in to assist with the search, and at least one school in the area was placed on lockdown.
The second suspect was apprehended around 4:30 p.m. The cash box and all but $20 was recovered.
“Chief Hunt did an excellent job of pursing and apprehending the suspects in this case,” said Sheriff McVicker. “Again the apprehension of the suspects in this case shows that close working relationships between law enforcement agencies can be beneficial for the safety of the citizens of our community and beyond.”
The suspects were identified as Jordan Swett, 20, of Rowland, and Leroy Hardin, 19, of Lumberton.
Both men are in the Bladen County Detention Center with secure bonds of $502,000 and $500,000 respectively.
