According to a news release, Smith and four other officers were called to a motel on Nov. 5 to investigate potential drug activity and had received consent to search a room and a car.

No drug activity was found, but the car owner called police that night to report that $60 had been stolen.

All officers participating in the search were wearing body cameras, and a review of the footage led to Smith as a suspect. Smith is on administrative leave without pay.

Chief Mark Holtzman said his job status could change once investigations are complete.
