WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Three years after plans were announced, construction appears to be underway for a Waffle House in downtown Wilmington.

In 2014, WilmingtonBiz.com reported a Waffle House was slated to open in the building once occupied by the SoapBox Laundro Lounge.

Work now appears to be happening at the North Front Street location.

There are currently 6 other Waffle House locations in the Wilmington area.

There is no official word yet on when the downtown location is set to open.

What a horrible decision to let a waffle house in Downtown Wilmington. It doesn’t fit in with the rest of businesses in the area, which are mainly small, local business owners. It takes away the charm of the area.

So when the drunks urinate and puke on the sidewalks and in alleys that ADDS to the charm?

But how many of these businesses are open at 2:00 AM. As one who has worked a lot of late hours, it is nice to have a place you can grab a bite, a cup of coffee and unwind after a really long day or night shift.

Over Medium, Medium Rare, Scattered, Smothered and Covered… That’s my thoughts on WH coming to downtown. I am sure they will have some A-1 steak sauce and always a full cup of coffee for me too. The locals eateries might feel a bit of heat in the kitchen, but with some of the crap service at some of the local digs, that might just be what downtown needs.
