Humpday Health: Becoming healthier with a New Year’s resolution

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New year. New me. That’s what some may be saying as 2018 gets going.

“I think a lot of people see New Year’s as a fresh start, an opportunity to leave the things behind in the past year and look forward to the new year,” said Joel Ivey, an Austin, Texas resident who was visiting family in Wilmington.

We checked in with a few people around the Port City to find out what their New Year’s resolutions are.

For some people, it’s all about exercise.

“I exercise a lot now, but I want to spend more time with my grandchildren in the new year. It’s popular now to go to the gym, everybody likes to run, everybody likes to walk, and Wilmington is just open to those sort of events,” said Wilmington resident Kathryn Graham.

Others are watching their diet.

“Just being more conscious of what we’re eating and the ingredients that go into those foods and just cooking a little bit more,” said Ivey.

And some are thinking about their mental health. Getting less connected to the outside world and trying to be a better person.

“I’m pretty good on the diet part and everything and the exercise. I feel like I’m at the best weight I’ve ever been at. I’m just more focused on just trying to be a nicer, more positive person who’s not as influenced by other people,” said Wilmington resident Emily Montgomery.

January is the perfect time to put these changes into action.

“I think you’re more gung-ho this time of year just because you’ve come off spending time with friends and family and maybe you’re a little happier and a little more optimistic. So you’re like, ‘Hey, I’m gonna do this now.’ Does it always happen? No, but I think we like to think that it will,” said Alana Ivey, Joel’s wife.
