Snowfall takes a toll on downtown Wilmington businesses

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The snow and ice have over stayed their welcome on the streets of downtown Wilmington especially for local businesses.

As the historic snowfall made its way through the Cape Fear, many enjoyed the day in the winter wonderland.

“It’s fun here. It’s fun that it snows and everything closes down until a couple days and then everyone is tired of it,” Dixie Grill Manager Alanna Buckland said.

It’s been a few days since the flurries stuck, now many like Buckland are ready for it to melt away.

“This is the first time I’ve experience anything like this in a long time,” Buckland said.

Buckland has been the manager of The Dixie Grill for ten years and said the restaurant has been closed for two days, something that didn’t even happen when hurricanes came through town.

“A lot of us lost a lot of shifts over this. I mean it was nice and I would rather have lost shifts then to take a chance and drive around, but we’re all ready for this to be over,” Buckland said.

The blanket of snow caused other businesses to close including Redix.

Now that they are open again the store may be full of items to sell, but customers have been far and few between.

“It’s been relatively like a ghost land. It’s been pretty quite very slow traffic,” sales associate Jared Church said.

Both the restaurant and retail shop are ready to have customers like they did before the snow fell.

Buckland said she hopes by Monday business will pick back up and they will have more customers come in from downtown.
