SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — As a relatively new teacher at Shallotte Middle School Trina Jones was surprised to find out she won was the first WWAY Michael and Son Teacher of the Week of 2018. Winning, she says, makes her feel like “the kids must really hear what I’m saying and know I love them.”
Jones, attended Brunswick county schools and is excited to be teaching there. She loves teaching so much that recent snow days had her itching to return. “The last four days,” she says, “I was crazy wanting to go back to school. When you love your job and you love coming to work it just makes every day better.”
For Ms. Jones, teaching is more than just daily lessons. She also wants her students to learn life lessons while in her class. “You can’t change the world until you change yourself,” she says. “So the change starts with you. I try to make sure they respect each other, respect themselves, and then everything else for them will come naturally.”
After learning she received dozens of nominations all Ms. Jones could say to her class is “it makes me want to cry. I love you all.”
WWAY Teacher of the Week is a weekly recognition of educators in the Cape Fear who are making an impact beyond the classroom. You can nominate your favorite teacher by clicking the Teacher of the Week tab at the top of the WWAY website.
