WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW has a new Seahawk and his name is Joe D’Antonio.
The Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner got his lesson in teal collar work ethic as he worked along side the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
“It’s an opportunity to say thank you to them,” Commissioner D’Antonio said. “Thank you for what you do for UNCW and how hard you work. Also thank you for how you represent the CAA in such a first class manner. Of course, congratulations on winning the championship last year.”
Commissioner D’Antonio is touring around the CAA and visiting with all of last year’s conference champions in each sport. Both coaches have been around college basketball for some time and they said it was a special day to have him at Trask.
“It’s incredible,” UNCW Women’s Basketball Head Coach Karen Barefoot said. “What commissioner comes in and actually practices with you and gets to see the team? He gets to talk to them and interact with them, it’s amazing. It’s a once in a lifetime experience for them.”
Now Coach C.B. McGrath and Coach Karen Barefoot didn’t take it easy on the commisioner. He worked on offense, defense and even got his conditioning in.
“It was a nice little break for us, I think our guys enjoyed it,” UNCW Men’s Basketball Head Coach C.B. McGrath said. “He got out there and did a few drills and had some nice passes. He’s in pretty good shape. Us on staff and our coaches know him better than any of our players do. But it’s good for him to interact with our student athletes. They get to see the human side and not just the figure head side.”
D’Antonio wanted to break down that barrier and create the connection between student athlete and commissioner. But he also got himself a front row seat to the new era at UNCW and he said the program is in good hands.
“You really have an opportunity to do some special things here and you’ve already done that at several different levels,” Commissioner D’Antonio said. “I see no reason why that doesn’t continue with what C.B. and Karen has going.”
