WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If there’s one word to describe the upcoming 2018 season for the UNCW Softball team, it’s excitement. A historic year has led to new expectations and with the season beginning Saturday, the team is ready to roll.
“Our girls are just over-the-top excited about the opportunity to step on the field against another team and to prove that we are a different and better team,” UNCW Softball Head Coach Kristy Norton said. “We’re a faster team and the dynamics of our group is just incredibly different than last year.”
The 2017 season for the UNCW Softball team was historic for the Team in Teal. A school record 35 wins highlight the long list of accomplishments, and this year, they hope to be even better.
“I expect us to succeed and even go beyond that fourth place pick that we received,” UNCW Senior Pitcher Sarah Davis said. “I think we’re really going to surprise some people in the conference and use our experience from last year to really help us this year.”
The returning experience is highlighted by reigning CAA Defensive Player-of-the-year Kelsey Bryan. Now in her senior year, Bryan not only expects to help her team with her skills, but her leadership as well.
“Defensive Player-of-the-year was awesome, but I do think it’s about bringing people up on my level of play,” Bryan said. “Just leading them to want to be that and knowing that it’s not that far out of reach.”
After not starting their season with most of the country last weekend, UNCW opens with Radford this Saturday.
Following a season with so much success, what can Seahawk fans expect Opening Day?
“This new stadium and everything has given them a sense of community and given us a sense of playing for something much bigger than ourselves,” Bryan said. “They’ll be excited when they step into Boseman.”
