Hundreds put on their dancing shoes for a Night to Shine

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For the second year in a row the Port City dimmed the lights and turned up the music to put on a perfect evening celebrating those with special needs.

Global River Church and Lifepoint Church teamed up to host Night to Shine, an event sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation.

“This is about celebrating who you are. You are perfect and you are special and we want to honor you in that way,” Lifepoint Pastor, Jeff Kapusta said.

More than 250 prom-goers of all ages got the chance to feel like a star during the fun-filled event decked out with a red carpet, paparazzi and fans.

“It has been an emotional roller coaster attending my very first Night to Shine. So much celebration. So much joy. So much emotion,” Kapusta said. “And to see our guests come through many throwing their hands up in the air high-fiving the paparazzi it’s been such a special moment.”

The event gave those with special needs the chance to enjoy prom in ways they might not have had the chance to. It was all thanks to volunteers from across Wilmington.

“It shows me that as a community there’s this incredible heart for humanity and heart for our neighbors,” Kapusta said.

From makeup, nails, dresses, a photo booth, dancing, putt putt, cornhole, limos and karaoke. While there was tons of fun to be had, many people enjoyed different things more than others.

“Hanging out with my friends,” Jennifer said.

“I like dance,” Christina said.

“I like playing golf,” Chris said. “What about dancing?” “No I like sports,” Chris said.

No matter what they liked or did not like, it was a night full of lasting memories.

More than 700 volunteers and caretakers came together to make the night possible.

Organizers and prom-goers hope they can continue to host Night to Shine in Wilmington for years to come.
