Panthers release Jonathan Stewart, franchise all-time leading rusher

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WSOC) — Veteran Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart was released by the team Wednesday.

Team officials said the move gives the Panthers significant salary cap relief and opens the door for young players to get more opportunities.

Stewart, the Panthers’ all-time leading rusher, was selected in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft and played every snap of his 10-year career with the team.

He had one year remaining on his contract.
