WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — People filled a New Hanover County courtroom Thursday morning, but it was not for a court case. It was for the State of the District Address.
District Attorney Ben David wanted to hold a ceremonial session of the court so he could tell everyone what his office has been doing to fight crime.
David spoke about the growth of his office since he began saying it is now the largest law firm in the region. With those successes he also talked about challenges.
“You all know in some respects this is the worst of times. There is carnage on the roads especially when we talk about impaired driving and increasingly distract driving. Family violence continues to be an issue. We had 10 murders just related to domestic violence this past year,” District Attorney Ben David said.
David also talked about the hundreds of gang members in the community, school shootings happening around the nation and the local opioid epidemic.
