WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – Mason Berne collected three hits for the Seahawks, but UNCW was unable to overcome five unearned runs as Ohio State picked up an 8-3 road win on Tuesday at Brooks Field.
The Buckeyes upped their record to 10-6 while the Seahawks dipped to 11-5.
Berne was joined by Greg Jones, Zack Canada and Ryan Jeffers with multi-hit games, each finishing with two. David Sheaffer knocked in two runs for the Seahawks, who left 12 runners on base for the afternoon.
Noah McGowan had three hits and knocked in two runs for OSU while Connor Pohl had two hits and three runs batted in for the Buckeyes.
Freshman Griffan Smith (1-0) earned his first collegiate win, going 3 2/3 innings in a predetermined start for OSU. The lefthander surrendered a run on six hits and a walk while striking out two.
UNCW red-shirt sophomore Breydan Gorham fell to 0-2 with the loss.
Up next: The Seahawks and Buckeyes conclude the series with a 4 p.m. start on Wednesday.
How it happened: Ohio State grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of a Seahawk error followed by a walk. McGowan plated the first run with a single and Pohl made it 2-0 with a RBI ground ball out. Tyler Cowles completed the scoring with a two-out RBI single for a 3-0 lead.
Inside the box score: Ohio State landed its leadoff hitter on base safely in four innings and scored in all four innings … UNCW finished 1-for-10 in hitting with two outs … Both teams plated two runners from third with less than two out.
Notes: UNCW reliever Justin Walke pitched a season-high 4 2/3 innings while fellow reliever Henry Ryan allowed one hit over two innings … UNCW is now 8-3 at home and saw a five-game home winning streak snapped … Doug Angeli had his six-game hitting streak halted while Berne extended his to four game … With two hits, Canada has now reached base safely in 11 straight games.
