Diamond Hawks rack up 19 runs in blowout win


WILMINGTON, N.C. (UNCWSports.com) – Four hits from freshmen Doug Angeli andNoah Liles led an offensive explosion for UNCW on Friday as the Seahawks blanked visiting Quinnipiac 19-0 at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks (12-6) halted a brief two-game skid with the win while Quinnipiac (8-7) saw its own two-game winning streak snapped.

UNCW racked up a season-high 19 runs on 22 hits as every played in the starting lineup finished with at least one hit. Freshman Greg Jones sparked the Seahawks at the top of the lineup, going 2-for-4 and scoring four runs. Angeli and Liles both finished 4-for-6 while Angeli plated three runs and Liles two. Ryan Jeffers, a junior, doubled twice to raise his Colonial Athletic Association-leading total to 10.

Alex Royalty (3-1) earned the win, the 20th of his career, tossing seven shutout innings and limiting Quinnipiac to four hits. He walked none and struck out eight.
Liam Scafariello had two hits for the Bobcats.

QU starter Taylor Luciani (2-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing nine runs, six earned, on 12 hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Up next: Sophomore Zarion Sharpe takes the mound for UNCW on Saturday when the series continues with a 4 p.m. start.

How it happened: UNCW jumped on the Bobcats in the first two innings, building a 5-0 lead. In the first inning, Jeffers doubled in the first run and Cole Weiss and Angeli added RBI singles for a 3-0 lead. Jeffers doubled in another run in the second and Riley Zayicek, making his season debut, singled in the second run of the inning.

Inside the box score: UNCW finished 15-for-29 with RISP … The Seahawks landed their leadoff hitter on base safely in five innings and scored  runner from third with less than two outs in 5-of-8 opportunities … Angelia and Liles had UNCW’s first two hits of the season with the bases loaded … Royalty and relievers Chris Joyner and Henry Ryan retired 13 consecutive hitters between the fifth and ninth innings.

Notes: The 19 runs were the most since a 20-7 win at Hofstra in 2017 … The 22 hits were the most since a 23-hit outing against East Tennessee in 2016 … Royalty became the 16th Seahawk with 20 career wins (20-5) and the first since 2016 when Ryan Foster reached that mark … Royalty has allowed just two runs in four starts at Brooks Field this season and owns a 0.78 ERA at home this season … He has fashioned a 21-inning shutout streak at Brooks this season … His eight strikeouts were one off his season high of nine (3/2 Princeton) …Mason Berne and Jeffers both extended their hitting streaks to six games and Zack Canada now has a five-game streak … Canada has reached base safely in 13 straight games … UNCW is now 4-3 in games when it does not homer.
