WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — March Madness met the Special Olympics Wednesday at UNCW as hundreds of athletes perfected their game with the help of some seahawk experts.
The Basketball Skills Day at Trask Coliseum was to get athletes active and fit and also have some fun.
The UNCW Men’s Basketball Team was on hand to help teach basketball basics like dribbling and passing.
Event Coordinator Tiffany Lesley says the event helps athletes discover their ability and build confidence.
“A lot of our athletes don’t have the same opportunities as your traditional schools students, so this is a way for them to get out be with their peers to enjoy an activity, learn an activity and perfect an activity,” Lesley said.
Most of the athletes are from New Hanover County Schools.
The next event is the spring games next month.
