Seahawks Softball blanks UNC, 3-0

WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – Sophomore Rylee Pate threw a complete-game shutout and junior Lacey Fox hit a two-run home run as UNCW blanked North Carolina, 3-0, in a non-conference softball game at Boseman Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The win elevated the Seahawks’ record to 11-19 while North Carolina fell to 19-18 after suffering its second straight loss.

Pate, who upped her record to 4-6 on the season, earned the first shutout of her college career after scattering seven hits with a strikeout and three walks.

Fox, meanwhile, blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence to break a scoreless deadlock in the fifth inning to give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead they did not relinquish. It was Fox’s second home run of the year.

Sophomore Meghan Whitecavage added an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning. She was one of six UNCW hitters to record a hit in the game.

Redshirt freshman Kristina Burkhardt and junior Kiani Ramsey each collected two hits for the Tar Heels while senior Taylor Wike reached base three times with a single and two walks.

Sophomore Kellyn Daly took the loss for North Carolina, giving up three runs on six hits over 5.1 innings with a strikeout and three walks.

Notes: UNCW ended a 17-game losing streak against the Tar Heels … It was the Seahawks’ first win over North Carolina since Mar. 1, 2001, a 2-1 victory at Boseman Field … North Carolina made its first visit to the Port City since Feb. 23, 2011 … The Tar Heels outhit UNCW by a 7-6 margin … Senior Kelsey Bryan has now hit safely in five straight games after recording a single in the third inning … Freshman Carson Shaner has reached base safely in each of her last seven contests after going 1-for-3 on Tuesday … The Seahawks are now 2-2 on their current eight-game homestand … Pate became the first UNCW pitcher to throw a solo shutout since Peyton Jordan against Towson last year … North Carolina played its 10th consecutive road contest and finished the road swing with a 7-3 mark.

Up Next: UNCW resumes Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend by welcoming Elon to Boseman Field for a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday before closing out the series with a single game on Sunday.
