Nursing home employee accused of stealing opioids from residents


BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — An employee at Brunswick Cove Living Center in Winnabow is accused of taking opioids that were prescribed to residents.

Michelle Margaret Whitney, 36, is charged with three counts of embezzlement of controlled substance by employee and two counts of trafficking in opiates more than 14 grams but less than 28 grams.

According to warrants, Whitney took more than 100 hydrocodone tablets from the locked controlled substance drawer of a medication cart.

The alleged crimes happened April 1 and April 5.

She’s also accused of taking one pill on February 10 from the locked cart.

Whitney is being held in the Brunswick County Detention Center under a $450,000 bond.
