NEWARK, Del. (UNCWSports.com) – Blake Deatherage collected a pair of hits and scored twice for UNCW, but Delaware captured the Colonial Athletic Association series opener on Friday at Bob Hannah Stadium with a 5-3 victory.
The Blue Hens ran their record to 16-14 with their third straight win and are now tied with UNCW for third in the CAA standings with a 4-3 record. The Seahawks, who dropped their second-in-a-row, fell to 20-13 on the season.
Deatherage, making his second career start at designated hitter, was the lone player in the game with a multi-hit outing. Greg Jones swiped a pair of bases to give him 10 on the season.
Nick Patten it a two-run homer in the Blue Hen fifth to push the UD lead to 5-2.
DU starter Kyle Hinton turned in a fine performance, going six inning and limiting UNCW to two runs, one earned, on six hits and three walks.
Alex Royalty took the loss for UNCW, falling to 3-4 on the season. Royalty went 6 2/3 innings and recorded 14 ground ball outs.
Up next: The Seahawks and Blue Hens continue their series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. start.
How it happened: Delaware erased a 2-0 deficit in the third inning, scoring three runs on three hits and a pair of UNCW errors. Erik Bowren plated the first run with an infield single and the second came in on a fielder’s choice. The final run of the inning came on a throwing error.
Notes: Mason Berne extended his hitting streak to 14 games and his consecutive games reached safely to 27 games … UNCW recorded a season-high 16 ground ball outs.
