NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Women across the Cape Fear are picking up hammers and saws to help a family build stability, independence, and strength through housing.
It is the goal of National Women Build Week, an initiative created by Habitat for Humanity and Lowe’s.
About 200 women are building a house for a mother and her two children on Cantwell Road in New Hanover County.
The work kicked off Monday morning and will continue throughout the week and take around three months to complete.
Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity Director of Development Lynne Wooten said she is proud to be a part of something special.
“We had so many women that were interested to come on board, to do all of the fundraising, to buy the supplies for the house,” Wooten said. “You know, to say that ‘Yes, we will put all of the man hours in to build the home’ and they did it. They did it before the due date and they have been here with bells on.”
National Women Build Week is expected to take place in 300 communities across the country
Lowe’s Home Improvement donated nearly $2 million to Habitat to support the growing event.
