BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Health Services has a new initiative, to get kids and their families active and thinking about nutrition.
“We wanted to have something where families in the community can come out, play some activities and get some nutrition education for their kids. Something easy that they can take home and use on the weekends just to have fun with their families,” said Brunswick County Health Services health educator Allison Campbell.
It’s Fun with Fitness and kids can play games like cornhole, hula hoop, and hopscotch. There are also tips on healthy snacks and ways to stay hydrated for their parents.
Brunswick County is large and diverse so organizers are trying to make it easy for people to come out.
“We come to the community. We try to set up these locations so that, no matter where you live in the county, it will be easy for you to drive over to the park that you live nearest to,” Campbell said.
Campbell says the county has a responsibility to get this type of information out to the community.
“I think it’s our responsibility to just get out, connect with people, talk to them, give them information that they can take home and use and prepare healthy meals for their family and provide some physical education with activities they can use at home as well,” Campbell said.
The next Fun with Fitness event will be held this Saturday at Shallotte Park from 9 a.m. to noon. BCHS plans to have another one in the fall at Smithville Park in Southport.
