WILMINGTON, NC (StarNewsOnline) — The owners of the Hotel Ballast in downtown Wilmington have filed a lawsuit against the developers of River Place, alleging construction on Water Street has caused the hotel to lose money.

On Tuesday SOHO Wilmington LLC, which owns the hotel, filed suit in federal court against Water Street Ventures, LLC, East West Partners Management Company, Inc. and Barnhill Contracting Company. East West is developing River Place through Water Street Ventures, and Barnhill is handling construction.

River Place is a planned 13-story mixed-use development in the 200 block of North Water Street, across the road from the Hotel Ballast. That hotel, formerly the Hilton Wilmington Riverside, was renovated and renamed under Hilton’s Tapestry Collection brand late last year.

The lawsuit claims that a drainage improvement project on Water Street to facilitate River Place’s construction has blocked the hotel’s driveways, inconveniencing guests and employees. SOHO Wilmington claims the construction, which started in January, has cost the hotel revenue.
