WILMINGTON, N.C. (UNCWSports.com) – For the second time in as many weeks, UNCW senior Mason Berne was named Colonial Athletic Association Player-of-the-Week after leading the Seahawks to a 2-1 week, including a season sweep of nationally-ranked North Carolina.
Berne batted .538, going 7-for-13 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored and four driven in. He had at least two hits in each of UNCW’s three games on the week, including a game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth against Charleston on Thursday at Brooks Field. Earlier in the week, he went 2-for-3 with a walk as UNCW knocked off seventh-ranked UNC, 4-2, to complete a home-and-home series sweep of the Tar Heels. It was the first time since 1982 that the Seahawks had swept North Carolina.
Berne, who has now been named CAA Player-of-the-Week three times this season, leads the conference with a .353 batting average and ranks among the top-three in hits, home runs, runs batted in, total bases and slugging percentage.
In conference play, the Southport, N.C. native paces the league with a .360 batting average, eight home runs and 25 RBI’s.
The Seahawks open their CAA tournament appearance on May 23 against Delaware in Harrisonburg, Va. First-pitch is set for 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.
