HARRISONBURG, Va. (UNCWSports.com) – Alex Royalty tossed his first career complete game, allowing two runs on three hits, as UNCW topped top-seeded Northeastern, 9-2, on Thursday at the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Seahawks (35-20) moved to Friday’s winner’s bracket championship game while the Huskies (33-18) move to the loser’s bracket.
Royalty (6-4) struck out five and recorded 15 outs on ground balls in posting UNCW’s first complete game of the season.
Greg Jones collected three hits in the game while home runs off the bats of Ryan Jeffers, Cole Weiss and Kep Brown powered the Seahawks, who broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning. Jeffers drove in three runs while Zack Canada added a two-run double in the fourth inning outburst.
Sean Mellen (10-2) took the loss for the Huskies, lasting just 3 1/3 innings.
Offensively, Jake Farrell belted his ninth homer of the season leading off the ninth. Royalty held the Huskies hitless from the third to the ninth innings.
Up next: The Seahawks will face the winner of Thursday afternoon’s Elon and College of Charleston game on Friday at 11 a.m.
How it happened: In the UNCW fourth inning, Weiss lined his fourth homer of the season to open the inning and seven more Seahawks made their way to the plate. Canada doubled in two and Jeffers followed one batter later with a two-run shot, his 15th of the season, to make it 6-1.
Notes: With five strikeouts, the Seahawks set a new program record with 497, breaking the previous mark of 493 set in 2015 … The complete game effort from Royalty was the seventh complete game for the Seahawks in CAA tournament action … Mason Berne saw his consecutive game reached base safely halted at 48 … UNCW is now 19-0 when scoring six or more runs in a game.
