WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Anna Griffith says learning music is a gift in many ways and she’s thrilled to be a teacher at Myrtle Grove Middle School.
She is also thrilled to be the WWAY Michael and Son Teacher of the Week.
“Learning a musical instrument and being in band, orchestra or even chorus,” she says “is is a life skill that not everyone can say they have. But beyond that they learn so many life lessons.”
It’s helping them with those life lessons that she says enhances her place in their lives. “We talk about dating. We talk about responsibility, accountability in other classes and to me that’s more important than my content because if they learn that stuff first then my content the music comes straight from the heart and it makes them sound better.”
Being in her class also means being part of a family to the point they’ve put “We are Family, We are Band” on their jackets this year.
As her students get ready for the summer and life beyond middle school she always wants them to know “I care about them and that even though they’re not my kids anymore they’re still my kids.”
