Thomas was the Mayor of Leland from 1993 to 2005 and played a key role in the Brunswick boom of the town.

His negotiations and progressive approach brought in more homes, businesses and even led to a television station.

Thomas said when he took office he and his staff knew they would be here one day.

“When we were building the town, we knew that it would be like this one day,” Thomas said. “We had to have the largest town in the county, the biggest population and be the gateway to Brunswick County. I wasn’t really working for the marker, I was working for the town. But I’m glad and hopefully people that come behind me will be recognized also.”

Thomas thanked each and every person in attendance to see his marker unveiled. He said without them he wouldn’t have received the honor.
