NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Life guards and visitors at the beach are on high alert after four people drowned over the weekend in our area.
One man died at White Lake and three others died at Wrightsville Beach, Sunset Beach and Holden Beach on Saturday.
Beach rescue teams are urging people to stay out of the water entirely when red flags are up, like they were on Monday.
Three people were pulled from the water at Wrightsville Beach and two people were rescued at Carolina Beach on Monday due to rip currents.
One vacationer said she can’t believe people are still taking their chances in the water.
“They are very brave, but they have been forewarned,” said Penny Taylor, who is visiting from Randolph County.
Taylor says she’s seen currents like these quickly sweep children from one end of the beach to the other.
Rip currents risks are expected to be high again on Tuesday.
