WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Are you ready for some football? Today all 16 of our area teams hit the fields for the first official day of fall camp, including the defending champion New Hanover Wildcats.

A little rain didn’t stop the cats from getting back to work. While many teams have been doing voluntary workouts for a few weeks now, today everyone was required to be in attendance for the annual kickoff to the Fall sports season.

As of right now everyone is 0-0. What happened last season is in the rear view mirror.

It was a wet morning across the Cape Fear, but you could see the excitement of the players and the coaches.

“It feels good,” New Hanover Head Coach Earl Smith said. “I got up a little extra early this morning with that excitement. I knew if I didn’t get up feeling that way it was time for me to get out of it. I know that I’m still loving it. I got up at 5 o’clock and I was down here at the field house before everyone else. There’s always something special about that first day, even though we’ve been working out all summer.”

We’ll have more on practices of the teams throughout the week as football season ramps up leading into the first scrimmages and games of the year.
