UPDATE: The alert has been lifted.
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The state has issued a swimming alert for one portion of Holden Beach after tests showed high levels of bacteria.
The alert affects waters at the public access at the east end of McCray Street in Holden Beach.
Samples collected Wednesday showed bacteria levels that exceeded the state and EPA’s recreational water quality standards.
State officials will test the site again Thursday, and the results of the sampling will dictate further action.
People swimming in the water with high bacteria levels have an increased risk of developing a gastrointestinal illness or skin infections.
