WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover High School Band Boosters are hosting their 2nd annual ‘We Just Want to Play’ Charity Volleyball Tournament Saturday. The goal is to raise $5000 to help any student interested in music.
According to the Band Boosters there are roughly 75 students who participate in band year round at New Hanover High School. Some of those come from socio-economically challenged homes. More than 50% of students drop music between middle and high school for economic reasons. The Boosters want to lower that number by raising money to help.
Band Drum Major Jack Canseco says “band is a great opportunity to learn responsibility and be part of group all committed to excellence.” He also says he hopes “as many students as possible get to participate.”
On Saturday the Band Boosters are hosting a volleyball tournament at Captain Bill’s Backyard Grill in Wilmington. From noon till 5 p.m. It is a family-friendly event and is free. Enjoy some great volleyball, live music, corn hole, raffle baskets, and an arts and crafts fair. Early volleyball signups are $80 per 4 person team through 8/4. If you work at a school you get an extra gift bag with goodies and raffle tickets. All proceeds go the the NHHS band program and youth wanting to pursue music in high school.
