UNCW has been working hard over the past few weeks with contractors to prepare and service buildings that were affected by Hurricane Florence. They were prepared to accept students this morning, but they decided last night some buildings weren’t safe enough.
After a final walk-through last night to confirm they were ready for students, they determined they weren’t comfortable welcoming students back into Belk Hall and the University Apartments.
UNCW officials said the primary issues are in the hallways of Belk Hall and the hallways and common areas of the University Apartments but that they must act with caution for students health and safety.
They have decided to delay occupancy of rooms in those buildings and anticipate completing repairs and services of the common areas and hallways over the next few days. In the meantime, the university is working on options for off-campus housing, for short term rental.
