WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Veterans were honored at Cape Fear Community College Friday morning with a special ceremony outside.

The overall message to veterans was just because you take off the uniform, doesn’t mean you have to stop serving.

Civilians were encouraged to get involved in the veteran community.

CFCC student and veteran Kristen Wilkerson, who gave a speech on her experience as a Marine, says she hopes the ceremony had a positive effect on the veterans and civilians who attended.

“We’ve all still got each other’s backs,” said Wilkerson. “For those who haven’t had the chance to serve, obviously they know someone who has, and hopefully they can just appreciate veterans day and hopefully they were able to see the brotherhood and sisterhood that we have.”

CFCC president Jim Morton also touted some new programs at the school that he says have been successful for veterans.
