WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  Veterans Day isn’t until Sunday, but people in the Cape Fear have been getting a jump on honoring our nations heroes.

Plantation Village, a retirement community in Wilmington, has held a Veterans Day event on Battleship North Carolina for the past four years.

This year it was extra special.

Becky Grogan, marketing director for Plantation Village, says they are putting together a coffee table book honoring the 28 World War II veterans who live there.

One veteran says he thinks the book is a great way to keep their stories alive.

“For us, it was a very important time,” said WWII Navy Veteran Emerson Foote. “You signed up, you went and did your duty, did what you had to do, you had no idea if you’d ever get out or when. We were signed up for the duration of the war, and nobody knew of course when the war would end,” he said.

They unveiled a mock up of the book this morning, and plan to have it published by May 2019.
