TOPSAIL ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — After several reports of squatters taking over vacant homes, one man is reaching out to home owners letting them know that he might be able to help.
About a year ago, Tim Powell started Topsail Home Watch. He says he knows there are so many people who only live in these beach towns for a few months a year.
Powell wants to help keep all these homes safe.
“We are the eyes and ears for your home,” said Powell.
Powell had been checking on family members’ homes for years when he saw the need for a watchful eye in beach towns like Topsail Island.
“We go down, check for junk mail and mail that’s laying around. We walk around the house and make sure there’s no sign of vandalism or break-ins. We have the key. We go inside and check everything from mold or insects and make sure everything is functioning properly,” said Powell.
Powell and his son started Topsail Home Watch. They are certified by the National Home Watch Association and have clients from Surf City to Porter’s Neck.
One of Powell’s clients says this service is a necessity when you have a vacation home.
“We just wanted somebody to go back and check. for instance, when you have cold weather, make sure nothing is frozen up, there are no pipes spewing, that everything is as it should be. And walking through at random times on random days,” said Ernie McAlister, who is one of Powell’s clients.
McAlister says Topsail Home Watch is very thorough.
Powell custom tailors his services to what each client needs. He can do things as simple as checking security alarms, to inspecting cars and boats.
“The locals call us the “Watchyman.” So we keep an eye on it. We’re boots on the ground. If you’re in Greensboro and you needed something or your alarm went off and you wanted somebody to go check and make sure it was not a burglary, I’ll go check it,” said Powell.
Powell says he also has insurance in case something ever goes wrong. He can also recommend reliable contractors when work needs to be done.
