WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A vital part of public transportation across the Cape Fear could cease unless federal dollars are restored.

The Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority met Thursday to put a plan in place if the partial government shutdown extends beyond February.

If the shutdown is still in place February 15, the CFPTA issued a directive to Wave Transit Executive Director Albert Eby to notify employees that Wave Transit will cease operations on March 2 unless federal dollars are restored.

CFPTA board member Jonathan Barfield says there is grant money waiting to be released. The money has been authorized, but no one is there to send it to them.

“If it goes on much longer, folks won’t have public transportation,” Barfield said.

The shutdown will also impact the Multimodal Transportation Center, which is currently under construction.

Barfield said if payments aren’t received, they will have to figure out how to make payments or halt construction until monies are restored.
