WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)–Its a new season for UNCW baseball and another chance to prove their doubters wrong in 2019. The Diamond Hawks are coming off of a 39-23 season in which they won another CAA title and appeared in a NCAA Regional tournament.

In a poll released earlier this month College Baseball Daily picked UNCW to finish fourth this year in the CAA and the Seahawks are keeping that in the back of their minds.

“We haven’t got the respect we think we deserve especially after last season. We like it, it gives us a chip on our shoulder because people don’t expect as much as we do of ourselves. We’ll just prove everybody wrong like we did last season. Its our goal,” said UNCW sophomore Gage Herring.

Last season it was a slow start for the Diamond Hawks in conference play with a much younger roster than usual. The slow start didn’t last long as UNCW won 7 out of their last 10 games on their way to a conference championship. Headed into 2019 they don’t think it will take as long to get going.

“We have a good chance of doing that again , but doing it a lot earlier this year. We were young last year and then we brought back a lot of guys this year. So, it will be easier for us to mold together and really play together early in the season,” said Seahawk sophomore Greg Jones.

Mark Scalf returns for his 28th season as the head coach for the Seahawks. UNCW will welcome in 13 new faces to the program this season as they look to shock the college baseball world once again. So far the 2019 team has received nothing but praise from their longtime head coach.

“This is an outstanding group of young men that are athletic. They have shown us great focus at practice , a lot of want to , to get better. We’re looking forward to that opening four games on the weekend, to see what direction we need to go from there,” UNCW head coach Mark Scalf.

UNCW starts their 2019 season with opening day on February 15th at Brooks Field when the Seahawks host Saint Joseph’s at 4:00 P.M.
