PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A convicted sex offender is headed back to prison after admitting he sexually abused more than a dozen children and had child pornography on his home computer.

Cheyne Martin Potrafka, 35, of Burgaw was sentenced in federal court Thursday to more than 18 years in prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release.

Potrafka pleaded guilty to one count of receipt of child pornography on November 1,
2018. The charge stemmed from a state probation search.

On August 9, 2016, Potrafka began a term of state post-release supervision, following a 2013 conviction on two counts of indecent liberties with a child.

Before Potrafka was arrested in 2013, he advertised his babysitting services on the childcare website Care.com as “a good male role model with child care and medical background looking for babysitting or full-time ‘Manny’ work.”

His profile also said, “I realize that your child is the most precious thing in the world and I assure you that I will not fail the trust you place in me by allowing me to care for him/her/them when you can‘t be there.”

Not long after Potrafka post-release supervision in 2016, his probation officer became concerned about his compliance. Specifically, the officer learned that Potrafka admitted during sex-offender treatment to having sexually abused multiple children in the past and that members of his church had begun complaining about him lingering near children.

On March 1, 2017, probation conducted a search of his home. More than 150 images and a video of child pornography was found on his computer and hard drives. A later forensic examination revealed additional files that had been deleted. In an interview, Potrafka admitted to possessing child pornography. He also admitted to sexually abusing approximately 14 children during his lifetime, describing in detail the multiple incidents of past sexual abuse.
