NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Governor Roy Cooper met with New Hanover County officials and health officials to talk about expanding Medicaid on Tuesday.
Health care professionals expressed the dire need for Medicaid in the Cape Fear region. From young children to veterans, Cooper agreed that there is a need for expansion.
Cooper says they are working to get both parties on board. He says too many people are without health insurance right now.
“The federal government is offering 90% of the coverage,” said Cooper. “So, other states that have done this have taken 90% of the coverage for Medicaid expansion. This equals about $4 billion. The state is supposed to provide 10%.”
Cooper says health care companies and providers would match that 10%. He says North Carolina would be the 38th state to do this.
