One Love Tennis bringing the game back to Dr. Eaton’s home

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)–In a story we did last year, we reported that One Love Tennis here in Wilmington had purchased the once home and training facility of a tennis icon. That icon was Dr. Hubert A. Eaton, who just happened to coach the great Althea Gibson right in his own back yard.

One Love Tennis’s goal was to restore the home and court back to how it was in the mid 1900’s when Gibson trained daily on the clay surface. That dream is now turning into a reality .

On Thursday afternoon, the surface was laid down in exactly the same spot as the old court. It still has to be lined , with fences to be put up, but its still a dream come true for the One Love Tennis Founder Lenny Simpson. Simpson played on the original court when he was a child living in the neighborhood.

“We are thrilled to death. This court was originally here in 1948 and now were putting it back. We are weeks away from restoring that original, historic, iconic court,”said Simpson.

One Love Tennis hopes to have a ribbon cutting ceremony in the coming weeks.
