WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)–It was a clean sweep for Laney basketball on Friday night in the Mideastern Conference championships.

In the girls championship, it was low scoring all throughout. Laney led 10-0 after the first quarter, but Hoggard clawed their way back into the game. It was a six point game in the second quarter, but the Buccaneers never let the Vikings get closer than that. Laney sophomore Saniya Rivers heated up in the third quarter as Laney pulled away for the 37-24 win.

The streak is over for the Laney boys as they won their first MEC title in 19 years beating Hoggard 46-43. In the first quarter it looked like the Vikings were going to cruise as they led 20-4 after one quarter. That didn’t end up being the case Laney outscored Hoggard 26-9 in the second half to pull out the come from behind win.

Justin Clayton was a big reason Laney fought their way back into the game. He started the third quarter with back to back three pointers to get the Bucs within striking distance. Clayton led Laney in scoring with 11 points, while Cameron Blanks led Hoggard with 11 points as well.
