GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN, NC (AP) — A new wind speed record has been set at Grandfather Mountain, topping a record that’s less than two weeks old.
The Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation said in a statement Monday that the weather recording station at the Mile High Swinging Bridge measured a 3-second gust of 124 mph around midnight Sunday. That broke the previous record of 121.3 mph that was set on Feb. 13. Both records are the range of the winds in a Category 3 hurricane.
The region has been experiencing high winds with significant gusts on Sunday and Monday. Officials at Grandfather Mountain say starting late Sunday evening, the mountain saw 16 consecutive hours of gusts higher than 100 mph.
